Electronic maintenance information

How BMW Digital Service History works

BMW vehicles can hold service information in electronic systems instead of relying only on a stamped book. A completed workshop visit may create a digital record linked to the vehicle. On supported models, service information can also be viewed through BMW iDrive.

BMW Condition Based Service, or CBS, has a different role. It monitors selected service items and calculates when attention is due. CBS status is a maintenance reminder. It is not, by itself, proof that the work was completed.

For applicable generations, a BMW workshop can read vehicle and service-status data from the key. Newer connected vehicles may send service-related data through BMW TeleServices. Key reading and TeleServices help a workshop prepare for service, but they do not guarantee a complete history of past repairs.

The available BMW maintenance history depends on the model, production year, equipment, country, servicing route and workshop registrations. A visit may be absent when it was recorded only on paper or in a separate workshop system. Always compare digital entries with invoices and inspection documents.

Completed work

A registered service event may identify the visit and work entered by the workshop.

CBS service needs

CBS can indicate when selected maintenance items are due based on time or vehicle use.

Coverage is vehicle-specific

No single access route contains every BMW service event in every market.

For BMW owners

Where BMW owners can check maintenance information

A current owner can start with official BMW ConnectedDrive services and the My BMW app. Available functions can include vehicle status and service appointment tools. They vary by country, model, equipment and account connection.

Service information may also be visible in BMW iDrive on a supported vehicle. An authorised BMW dealer or BMW service centre can explain the records available for that VIN. Proof of ownership or another verification step may be required.

These owner routes are not universal archives. Older vehicles, imported cars and work performed outside participating systems may have different coverage. BMW advises customers to use the services available for their specific vehicle and market.

For buyers and sellers

A used-car buyer has different access

A person considering a used BMW normally has no access to the seller’s BMW ID, My BMW account or private dealer file. Ask the seller to provide invoices and any service information visible in the vehicle.

Vehicle Pass lets buyers, sellers and importers request available digital maintenance information before a purchase or transfer. It is separate from BMW ConnectedDrive and official BMW owner support.

Understand the available data

What may appear in a BMW maintenance report?

The search uses the 17-character VIN to identify maintenance records that are available for the individual BMW. Results can contain workshop events, service dates, mileage readings and descriptions of registered work.

The PDF organises the returned data for review. It does not judge the vehicle’s condition or tell you whether to buy it.

  • Digital BMW workshop events found
  • Visit dates and odometer values, when recorded
  • Entered maintenance operations and parts details
  • Basic vehicle information
  • Source references for reported entries

Report scope

The limits of a BMW workshop history search

This check has one purpose: to return maintenance data available for the VIN. It should be used with wider vehicle checks and original documents.

Possible report entries

  • Dates attached to service events
  • Odometer readings entered by a workshop
  • Workshop registrations linked to the VIN
  • Descriptions of completed maintenance
  • Inspections included in the returned data
  • Periods with no available digital event

Outside the search

  • Accident history
  • Ownership history
  • VIN decoding and full specifications
  • A mechanical inspection
  • A guarantee of complete workshop history

Before you buy or sell

When a BMW service record check is useful

The service display shows current or future maintenance needs. It does not always explain every earlier workshop visit. Digital records can add another source to your review.

01

Checking a seller’s documents

Place returned dates and mileage next to the invoices, iDrive information and sales description.

02

Preparing a BMW for sale

Give prospective buyers a structured record alongside the supporting workshop documents you hold.

03

Reviewing an imported BMW

Look for available entries from the vehicle’s earlier market, while allowing for transfers and coverage gaps.

Maintenance timeline

Reading a BMW maintenance timeline correctly

Read each entry as one piece of evidence. Check whether dates and odometer values progress in a sensible order. If they do not, ask the seller or workshop for an explanation. Learn more about odometer fraud and maintenance history before assessing a mileage timeline.

A gap has several possible causes. The BMW may not have needed a registered service during that period. Work may also have been entered in another system or documented only by an invoice. A gap alone does not prove missed maintenance.

Imported BMWs need extra care because workshop systems and access rules can differ between countries. Read our guide to digital service history for imported cars, then compare the returned entries with foreign invoices and registration papers.

BMW explains that Condition Based Service can indicate when an inspection or maintenance item is needed. This due information should not be confused with a record confirming completed work.

For a balanced review, combine the Digital Service Record with invoices, ownership documents and an independent mechanical inspection.

Model coverage

BMW ranges covered by VIN requests

Requests can cover BMW 1 Series, 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series and 8 Series vehicles. BMW X models often include the X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6 and X7.

The same VIN process can be used for BMW Z4, BMW M models and BMW i vehicles such as the i3, i4, i5, i7, iX1 and iX. A model name never guarantees results. Production year, market, equipment and registered servicing determine the data available.

Clear and independent

Independent BMW service history check

Vehicle Pass operates independently from BMW AG. It is not an official BMW product and has no BMW endorsement. The VIN request gives buyers, sellers and importers another way to review available maintenance data. Official BMW services remain the right route for owner-account support, vehicle service and technical advice.

  • VIN-based request
  • Clear PDF report
  • Focused on maintenance history
  • Money back if no data is found
  • Independent service

Do not mix these terms

BMW service history, CBS and key data

BMW Digital Service History refers to registered past maintenance. CBS estimates service requirements for selected items. The iDrive service menu can present due information and, on supported vehicles, service-history entries. These functions are related, but they are not interchangeable.

Key-read data can give an equipped workshop quick access to vehicle and service-status information on applicable models. It should not be described as a complete copy of every workshop invoice. See which car brands use a Digital Service Record for a wider comparison.

Good to know

A clean CBS display does not confirm a complete workshop history. Check completed entries and supporting documents separately.

BMW digital records

Maintenance records rather than vehicle specifications

A BMW VIN decoder is normally used to identify build or equipment details. This service instead looks for digital maintenance events associated with the VIN.

Do not use the result as an accident, theft or ownership report. It also cannot establish the present mechanical condition of the BMW.

Questions answered

BMW service history FAQ

Practical answers about BMW records, CBS, workshops and access limits.

BMW can store completed service information electronically on supported vehicles. The way it is displayed or accessed depends on the model, production year, equipment and market.

You can submit the 17-character VIN to request maintenance data available for that specific BMW. A valid VIN does not guarantee that records will be returned.

No. Older BMWs may rely more heavily on paper books and invoices. Even on newer vehicles, a workshop visit can be missing if it was not registered in an accessible digital system.

CBS monitors selected maintenance items and uses time, mileage or vehicle-use data to indicate when service is due. A CBS reminder describes a need. It does not confirm that a workshop completed the work.

No. CBS mainly indicates maintenance requirements. Supported iDrive systems may also show completed service entries. The menus and information differ by vehicle generation and software.

On applicable BMW generations, key data can help a workshop read vehicle details and current service needs. It should not be treated as a full archive of every repair or invoice.

They can appear when the workshop has entered its work into a system included in the available data. Registration ability and practice vary by workshop and country.

Yes. An entry may not be available after a vehicle moves between markets or workshop systems. Use foreign invoices and paper records to investigate any gap.

Official digital services may provide vehicle-status and service functions after the BMW is linked to the owner’s BMW ID. Availability depends on the country, model, equipment and active services.

Normally not. Personal BMW accounts and private dealer information are not transferred for a buyer to inspect. Ask the seller to show relevant information and documents before the sale.

Returned data can include service events, dates, mileage and entered workshop operations. The precise fields and number of events depend on the records available for the VIN.

If the search finds no maintenance records for the submitted vehicle, Vehicle Pass refunds the payment automatically.

No. Vehicle Pass is independent. It is not connected with, approved by or endorsed by BMW AG.

No. A record can describe past maintenance, but it cannot confirm the vehicle’s present condition. Arrange an independent technical inspection before purchase.
